Thanks for the comments so far. I'm thinking of Scotland in winter; short, dull days. I know the latest panels provide some power in dull conditions, but Shetland in winter? Maybe the conventional alternator & solar arrangement is enough.

I don't see wind generators being used on motorhomes/campers. Why is this? It strikes me that a combination of wind and solar would provide a pretty reliable energy source for off-grid ventures.
